SC Jr. Book Award Program

South Carolina state shaped graphic

Every year the South Carolina Association of School Librarians nominate 20 books for students to read.  Students vote for the winner in February.  At BMS, we have a voting party and all students who have read 3 nominees (and completed a 5 sentence review for each) are invited to come!

Digital Citizenship

In connection with BCSD's One Berkeley Connect initiative, Berkeley Middle students completed a Digital Citizenship program through Common Sense Media. The Common Sense Media Curriculum for Digital Citizenship is a free online resource and is necessary to guide students toward responsible and safe navigation of digital media. Each lesson is age appropriate and supports a cross curricular framework that addresses topics such as privacy and security, digital footprint, creative credit and copyright, online identity, communication, information literacy, internet safety, and cyberbullying. Each grade in a grade band has 5 lessons, as well as an unit assessment.

Summer Reading 2022

Even though it is summer we want all students at BMS to be prepared for the upcoming school year. The easiest way to accomplish this goal is to ensure that all BMS students read at least two books over the summer. Scientific research has been conducted that shows students lose academic knowledge over the summer months (it’s called the Summer Slide). The easiest way to combat this loss of knowledge is to simply read books. To encourage all students to foster a love of learning and reading it is expected that over the summer all students read one grade level fiction book of their choice* and one grade level nonfiction book.

Directions: All BMS Students (including 8th grade English Honors I) are expected to complete the summer reading assignment.

Students will select...
- one on-grade level fiction* novel
- one on-grade level nonfiction (informational text)
*Rising 8th Grade English Honors I ONLY – Fiction Novel has to be The Giver.

Read the two books over the summer and complete this Google Form (see link below) twice...once for EACH
book.
Due Date: The Summer Reading Assignment is due three weeks after the start of the school year (September 7, 2022).

Reward: In addition to growing your brain...you will be able to attend an ice cream social and be entered into a drawing to win awesome prizes!
