Policies and Procedures
VISION
The vision of The Hanahan High School Library is that all students will become life-long readers and learners. To accomplish this, we strive to be an approachable, accessible organization that promotes reading and learning in numerous ways. We are sensitive to the needs of all users and provide positive learning experiences that foster a love for reading as well as excitement during the research process. We strive to provide instruction and support materials for students and teachers to excel in a twenty-first century technologically based world.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Hanahan High School Library collection contains over ten thousand records and eleven thousand holdings. The collection is analyzed on a yearly basis via Titlewise and reviewed during preparation of reports for biannual Library Advisory Committee Meetings. An active collection development plan is in place and reviewed annually. Teacher and student requested materials are prioritized in selection.
STAFF
Dr. Zehner is the School Librarian. She obtained her Masters of Library and Information Science from the American Library Association accredited program at the University of South Carolina. She also has worked as a school psychologist and has a Masters of Science and Educational Specialist in School Psychology. Dr. Zehner's doctorate is focused on Curriculum and Instruction and was obtained at the University of South Carolina. She is a National Board Certified Teacher.
LIBRARY CONDUCT
Students must come prepared to do their work with a pass during scheduled class times. Students are expected to use proper and courteous language at all times. Students must follow the district and school dress code. Candy, snacks, gum, drinks, etc. are not to be consumed in the library. Cell phones are allowed with staff permission for use with school related assignments.
Circulation Policies for Students, Parents & Community Members:
All library books are due in three weeks with the exception of Reference books which have overnight circulation. A student must renew the library material by bringing the actual material into the library to be renewed. Renewals are allowed an unlimited number of times unless another student or teacher has placed a hold request for that material. Students are allowed to have out a maximum of 5 books.
Overdue notices are sent out at the periodically. If a student has an overdue book, they will only be allowed to check out a class set book until they have cleared their account and made partial payment toward their assessed overdue fines. The Hanahan High School Library charges overdue fines of 10 cents per school day on books. Overdue fine maximum is set at $5.00 per book. Patrons are responsible for paying for lost books and/or fines. Patrons may also incur obligations due to damaged materials.
Reference materials will be allowed to circulate overnight. Students can renew the material as many times as necessary, unless it is being held for a project, teacher or other student. If the reference material is overdue, there is a fine of $1.00 a day with a maximum fine of $5.00. Other items such as flash drives and headphones also incur at $1.00 per day overdue fine.
