About Us

hanahan middle school building

Hanahan Middle School helps all students develop the life and career attributes of the Profile of the South Carolina graduate through a rigorous academic environment in which students feel empowered and comfortable. Our school vision is shared with our school district’s vision: “To challenge and empower our students to be successful in a highly competitive world.” We do this by valuing student learning, maintaining a highly qualified faculty and staff, and developing teamwork and community engagement. We are committed to demonstrating improvement by developing a set of best practices tailored to the unique personality of our school.  Through professional development and collaborative planning in Professional Learning Communities, we continue to build upon prior knowledge to make the education offered at HMS second to none.

Our students’ academic and extra-curricular achievements continue to be among the best in the state. Each year, we are among the top in the district for our number of Duke TIP scholars and Junior Scholars. Our band continuously ranks top in both district and regional levels. We send teams to Trident Technical School’s QUEST competition each year. Eighth graders have the opportunity to participate in a service-learning club that was third in the state for the amount of money raised in the Pennies for Patients campaign. Hanahan Middle School has a yearbook committee, Student Council, Junior Beta Club, and FCA to provide opportunities for all students. Our guidance program facilitates our Lunch Buddy Program to provide mentors from SPAWAR to over a hundred at-risk students.

Curriculum and learning experiences provide all students with challenging and equitable opportunities to develop learning skills, thinking skills, and life skills. We are focusing our efforts on personalizing learning and providing student choice. We created a team this school year to help us prepare to be a STEAM school. Our STEAM units implement the 4 Cs – critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. In the STEAM unit, students identified a problem in their local community and had to think critically and collaborate to provide solutions to that problem. They used communication skills to obtain information from experts in the community and collaborated with peers to decide how to demonstrate their learning. Data from the learning experience reflected that students demonstrated advanced creativity, organized information and data in an effective way, worked well with others, demonstrated a high level of thinking, and strengthened soft skills such as perseverance and communication.

Using data from student assessment and an examination of professional practice, school personnel monitor and adjust curriculum, instruction, and assessment to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment among subject areas. Hanahan Middle School aligns expectations with the school’s goals for achievement and instruction with our statement of purpose.

Through a safe learning environment and ample opportunities, our students are equipped to meet the characteristics of the Profile of a South Carolina Graduate to develop future leaders.
