Library/Media Center Policies and Procedures

  • All books are accessible by searching the online catalog by author, title, subject or keyword. If you need help, please ask the Media Center staff for assistance.

  • Books are checked out for two weeks and may be renewed one time.  Students may check out two books at a time.

  • Overdue notices are distributed in homeroom before progress reports and report cards are issued.  You must return your overdue book to receive your progress report/report card.

  • Students are responsible for lost books or damaged books and the fines associated with those losses.

  • Accelerated Reader (Renaissance Place) is available.   Prizes and incentives will be given to top readers participating in this program.

  • The PTO sponsors the Big Kahuna at the end of the school year. This is to reward students who met their reading goal each nine weeks. Food, prizes and other great incentives given during this fun celebration

Internet Use

You must have an Acceptable Use Policy Form signed by a parent or guardian!  This form is located in your student’s planner (pass-book). Remember that the Internet is available for educational purposes only and improper use can result in the loss of this privilege.

Reading Counts (RC) & the Star Reader Program

The Reading Counts (RC) Program is administratively run by the Media Center. Books with matching RC tests have been labeled with the reading level, Lexile, and point value on the outside of the book. Reading levels have been color coded to make books easier to find at a specific reading level.  The HMS Card Catalog has also been set-up to identify the point value of books available at our school. Students may look at their reading record anytime on the computer.  The Media Center gives out different awards each nine weeks at the awards ceremony.  “Star Readers” are given a special incentive each nine weeks.

Reading Counts tests may be taken before school, after school, or during the school day at the teacher’s discretion. (Students must have a pass to visit the HMS Media Center before school.)
