With less than four weeks of summer left, Berkeley County School District’s school leaders are working hard to prepare for the 2023-2024 school year.

Tuesday was day two of the district’s annual Summer Leadership Conference, a four-day event held at Westview Middle where district officers and school administrators gather to learn, share, collaborate and plan for the new school year.

District leaders took a break right before lunch to recognize its two Principals of the Year and two Assistant Principals of the Year.

Congratulations to the following administrators:

Brooke Melcher – Elementary School Assistant Principal of the Year

Melcher is actually taking the helm at Hanahan Elementary this year as the school’s new principal, but district officers reflected on her time as an assistant principal at Marrington Elementary:

“When students see this assistant principal, their faces light up, arms go up for a hug and their day is made. This all takes place because she takes the time and energy that is needed to build relationships and let students, staff and families know that she cares. By taking time and establishing relationships, this assistant principal is very well respected. She is an amazing leader that deserves to be recognized for just how amazing she is.”

Leah Simmons – Secondary School Assistant Principal of the Year

Simmons has also moved on to a new role as the district’s 6-12 Math Coordinator, but district officers talked about how she made an impact as an assistant principal at Cross High:

“This assistant principal works tirelessly for the students and community members she serves. When asked to complete a task she jumps in 110 percent. This assistant principal exemplifies the role of a servant leader. When there was a need for a math teacher, our assistant principal taught the class all year to ensure students had a quality math education. We are proud of her and know she is an asset to our school.”

Tina Hoots – Elementary School Principal of the Year

Hoots serves as principal of Nexton Elementary.

“This principal is an amazing administrator who is loved dearly by her staff. She does the work that she asks her staff to do. She is easy to work with and will always stand in support of all that is good for students. She collaborates with other principals and shares ideas. This principal is a mentor to many across the district.”

Heather Ducker – Secondary School Principal of the Year

Ducker serves as principal of Sedgefield Middle.

“This principal works hard to advocate for her students and staff while managing many challenges within her school. She has implemented effective programs and has made changes to create a safe learning environment for students. This principal attends PLCs with an open mind and constructive feedback. She can think outside the box and be creative to problem solve in behavioral, instructional, and personnel situations. Her positive attitude about our profession is contagious.”
