Berkeley County School District welcomed back approximately 38,000 students on Monday, Aug. 21.

Among one of the highlights of the start of the 2023-2024 school year is the district’s brand new school in Carnes Crossroads, Carolyn Lewis School, home of the Loggerheads and named for Carolyn Lewis-Craft, who was the first female BCSD board member.

Lewis-Craft served on the board for 32 years. Her time included three consecutive terms as chairwoman. She retired from the district in 2008 and was honored by the House of Representatives for her service to children in the county. She passed away in 2019 following a brief illness.

The school held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 14, celebrated with students, parents, teachers and members of the community as BCSD officially unveiled its 48th school in the district.

More than 900 students reported to Carolyn Lewis School on Monday morning. Families were greeted by the school mascot, “Lewie”, as they entered the new school. Lewie gave out hugs and high-fives to students to help them start the day on the right foot.
