Moncks Corner Elementary fourth graders visited the Santee Canal Park on Friday to participate in a morning full of Colonial Day activities centered on the American Revolution.

The fort was the most significant British outpost along the 113 between Charles Town and Camden. Fort Fair Lawn was involved in the British attack led by Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton against South Carolina General Isaac Huger in the April 14, 1780 Battle for Moncks Corner as part of the British capture of Charles Town.

The British had evacuated Fair Lawn by late 1781. The preservation of the site was accomplished by a strategic partnership between the Lord Berkeley Conservation Trust and the South Carolina Battleground Trust, as well as the American Battlefield Trust.

This field trip ties directly into the fourth graders’ studies on the American Revolution. During their visit, students trekked through the woods to check out the fort site, where reenactors led cannon and musket demonstrations, and also ventured through the Berkeley Museum.
