National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 - October 15, celebrates the significant contributions that Hispanic and Latin Americans have made to the United States and their rich culture. To recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, Nexton Elementary invited it's third, fourth and fifth graders to complete optional projects to fill the Choice Board in NES's main hall.
Students were allowed to pick from the following project topics:
- Design a piñata that you would like at your own celebration. Complete research on the origin of piñatas. Create your own piñata , draw or make one and write a paragraph about what you learned about them.
- Choose one of the Hispanic countries to learn more about. On a poster paper, draw a map outline of the country, and fill its inside with drawings of objects that represent the area based off your research.
- Pretend you own a food truck. Research popular Hispanic foods and create a menu to offer your customers. Draw and color what your food truck would look like.
- Like Frida Kahlo, create a self-portrait. Research Kahlo and then write three facts about her and three facts about yourself on notebook paper.
- Choose a notable Hispanic figure and imagine a day in their life. Conduct research on the historical figure and create a schedule for their day based on what you find.
- Get creative! Using both English and Spanish words with illustrations, help your fellow students at NES learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month.
As a reward for going the extra mile, the students who completed a Hispanic Heritage Month project were allowed to make mini piñatas today with the help of Susan Nelson, a Multilingual Learner teacher.
