From March 4-8, Berkeley County School District will be celebrating the benefits of breakfast during National School Breakfast Week.

Throughout the week, students can earn prizes like bikes, iPads, underwater cameras and action cameras, which were purchased by Child Nutrition Services using Cool School points.

National School Breakfast Week was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the benefits of breakfast. It’s a federally funded program.

Research conducted by the National Biotechnology and Information confirms that children with higher intakes of key vitamins and nutrients excel. Simply put – children who eat breakfast are more likely to score higher on tests, perform highly in reading and math and have a higher level of focus on tasks.

“It is our belief that breakfast holds paramount importance as the initial meal of the day, serving to prepare both mind and body for day ahead.” said BCSD Child Nutrition Services Director Benny Smith.

This year’s theme is “Surf’s Up,” and BCSD’s Child Nutrition Services (CNS) team has planned some fun activities for students to enjoy.

To celebrate School Breakfast Week, BCSD school cafeterias will implement some festive beach-themed decorations in their serving lines to enhance the occasion. Throughout the week, CNS will also introduce new breakfast items for students to explore and enjoy.

Through the ordering of food and supplies for school kitchens, BCSD’s cafeterias were able to collected hundreds of thousands of Cool School perks or points that can be used to obtain items from various vendors at no further cost. In the past, points were used to acquire equipment, etc.

BCSD CNS managers decided all points acquired from purchasing food for students would go back to the students in the form of gifts. Those gifts are up for winning during National School Breakfast Week.

There will be daily prizes and larger prizes presented at the end of the week. If a student finds a sticker under their breakfast tray, there’s a daily prize like a gift card to be awarded. For the larger prizes, each time a student eats breakfast, it’s entered into a randomizer for selection at the end of the week.

Thank you, BCSD CNS, for all that you do!
