Berkeley County School District's youngest learners love it when visitors visit their classrooms to read to them.
Such was the case Friday morning at College Park Elementary, when volunteers came to the school to visit Pre-K through third grade classes to read to the children.
These were not just any volunteers, though; these were women in the community who came out as part of a special reading session that celebrated Women's History Month. Instructional Coach Caitlyn Spires-McDonald organized the event.
Women's History Month is observed in March to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.
Before March, the school invited members of the community to sign up to participate in the Read-In; guest readers first met up for a special light breakfast reception and then got to select books to take with them to the classrooms. The books all celebrated female authors and/or protagonists, such as "Cece Loves Science and Adventure," a STEM-themed picture book that celebrates girls in the field of science, and "A Thousand White Butterflies," a story about Colombia-native Isabella making new friends at school.
The guest readers came from different walks of life -- a former a executive of a big wireless company, a college friend of Spire-McDonald, and even a handful of women from BCSD's district office.
