Shameka Washington will continue her work in providing support to schools at the district level – but now with a fresh title, and with even more schools.
At Monday night’s board meeting, Berkeley County School District board members voted to appoint Washington as Chief Administrative Officer of School Services.
Last year, Washington was named Executive Director of Leadership and Secondary School Support, assisting in the improvement of professional knowledge and leadership skills for BCSD administrators working in secondary education. Her new role will allow her to expand and provide support to all the schools in the district, including elementary, and subsequently help to move student achievement forward.
Washington said being entrusted with this new role is both an honor and a responsibility.
“I’m thrilled to continue on this journey of collaboration, innovation and dedication to ensure every student’s success and well-being,” she said.
Washington studied history at South Carolina State University. She has a Master’s Degree in secondary social studies education from Winthrop University, plus a Master’s Degree in secondary educational administration from Charleston Southern University. She is working on becoming a Doctor of Education by further studying school administration through Liberty University.
Washington has served the district for 20 years. She previously taught history at both the middle and high school level while at Cross High for two years.
Her administrative background for the district kicked off in 2006, when she took on the role of assistant principal at Westview Middle. She was named Assistant Principal of the Year at the middle school level for the district during the 2010-2011 school year.
Washington became principal of Sedgefield Middle in 2012 before moving on to lead Goose Creek High in 2017, where she lead the first high school team in the Lowcountry to implement the Leader In Me curriculum, among other achievements.
Washington’s new contract is set to begin May 21.
