Berkeley County School District leaders are finalizing the demolition and construction schedule to support the Hanahan Middle School renovation and expansion project. The renovated and expanded Hanahan Middle School is projected to re-open its doors for the 2026-2027 school year. Due to the significance of the onsite construction, Hanahan Middle students will transition from the current middle school campus to a temporary, modular campus at Hanahan Elementary School beginning in August 2024.

“I am very excited about the construction and updates for Hanahan Middle School,” said District 1 representative Michael Ramsey. “This school renovation and expansion is much needed in Hanahan, and it has been a priority for me to ensure that this project was scheduled and budgeted as soon as funding became available. I very much appreciate those who supported the voter-approved one-percent Education Capital Improvements Sales and Use Tax, and the commitment of my fellow board members and the administration to ensure this project was slated for phase one completion.”

In November, Hanahan Middle hosted a community meeting to allow stakeholders to review the school rendering and site plans, and a site plan for temporary middle school modular buildings to be housed on the Hanahan Elementary campus. Attendees reviewed the modular floor plan layout, and provided feedback to the district for consideration.

“Our team has spent the last five months reviewing, deliberating, and evaluating the project and the transition plans for Hanahan Middle students during construction,” said BCSD Superintendent Dr. Anthony Dixon. “Based on feedback regarding the desire to keep the students together as one school and the feasibility of existing site options, we are confident that a temporary transition to a modular campus at Hanahan Elementary will best serve our middle school students and staff during the project.”

While construction is completed on the current middle school campus, students and staff will continue teaching and learning in a multi-classroom, temporary modular campus placed on the available four acres at Hanahan Elementary. The 6 modular units will include, but are not limited to:

  • 31 regular classrooms, 6 science labs, 3 self-contained classrooms, and a health

    classroom

  • Cafeteria that will accommodate a serving line and seating for more than 70 students indoors and tables for outdoor seating

  • Band room with 3 storage closets

  • Art room with cabinets, sink and storage

  • Chorus room with storage

  • Dedicated Physical Education space, with storage and outdoor access

  • Multiple office spaces, to include a front office and conference room

  • Multiple staff workrooms and restrooms

  • Multiple student restrooms

  • Multiple custodian closets and storage closets

  • Shared media center and academic lab

To reduce the impact on traffic and school operations, the Hanahan Elementary and Middle administration will stagger pick up and drop off bell schedules, and will work together to develop shared use plans and unifying activities that will benefit students, staff, and the community. District and school leaders will continue to work closely with the City of Hanahan and Berkeley County Government to ensure that the transition receives the support and resources necessary to ensure successful implementation.

“A renovated and expanded Hanahan Middle School is much needed and will be an exciting project for our community,” Ramsey added. “However, it is not feasible to complete this project without some disruption to current operations. We will work together to reduce impacts, but acknowledge that we will experience growing pains and ask that we remain committed to working together to address the challenges. I am confident that we will all be better for it when those doors open to receive students in our updated and expanded state-of-the-art Hanahan Middle School.”

The Hanahan Middle and Hanahan Elementary administrative teams will host school specific parent engagement opportunities, in-person and virtual, to ensure that Hanahan Middle and Hanahan Elementary students, staff, and parents are prepared for the upcoming transition. More information about these opportunities are forthcoming.
