A cozy classroom is the perfect setting for some reading on the last day of school before Winter Break – even better if some special guests get to join the fun.
H.E. Bonner Elementary spent its half day on Friday by hosting a read-a-thon. This was a special event where local “celebrities” signed up to come and read a book to a classroom.
The school asked, and the community delivered; H.E. Bonner had roughly 60 volunteers commit to popping by the school throughout the morning to go read to the children.
Among the local celebs who came out to read included BCSD Superintendent Dr. Anthony Dixon, Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton, Timberland High Beta Club students (many of whom are former H.E. Bonner students themselves and now have younger siblings at the school that they got to read to), lots of parent volunteers and community members, district officers and cabinet members, and more.
As the H.E. Bonner Elementary Foxes, the school was going for the theme reflecting a cozy day in a fox's den. Students and staffed rocked their holiday apparel – lots of onesies and matching jammies – and a handful of visiting readers made sure to dress the part as well.
In addition to the read-a-thon, a group of students who were successful in completing a recent reading log were invited to the “the Den,” a sort of VIP area where they got to enjoy some hot chocolate and snacks.
This was the first time H.E. Bonner Elementary has hosted its read-a-thon but based off the reception, the school is eager to bring it back next year.
