Berkeley County School District is pleased to announce that Ruth Butka has been named principal of Berkeley Elementary.

Board members unanimously approved the appointment during Monday night’s board meeting, with Butka’s contract taking effect immediately on Jan. 7.

This is a big move for Butka, who has provided administrative support in the district for about 10 years, serving in assistant principal roles at Cainhoy Elementary, Boulder Bluff Elementary, Daniel Island School, Sangaree Elementary and Mount Holly Elementary before joining Moncks Corner Elementary this past year.

Butka said she is excited to lead Berkeley Elementary.

“I’m looking forward to getting in there, getting my feet wet and meeting the kids and the teachers,” she said, adding that she appreciates the ongoing support she has received from the district. “I’ve been an assistant principal for 10 years, so the district has given me opportunities that not everybody would, and I definitely appreciate BCSD for doing that.”

She started as a physical education teacher at Whitesville Elementary in 2009. She later moved to Nexton Elementary, where she was named Teacher of the Year for the 2014-2015 school year. She has also served as a teacher evaluator, trainer, mentor and grade chair. In addition, during her years as an assistant principal, Butka was nominated for the title of Assistant Principal of the Year multiple times.

Butka became EMT certified through Trident Technical College and studied kinesiology at Charleston Southern University. She also has a Master of Education degree from Southern Wesleyan University.
