Better test scores, better focus, better grades – all “clues” indicating how important it is for students to start the day off on the right foot with some breakfast.

All next week – March 3 through March 7 – Berkeley County School District is celebrating the benefits of breakfast as part of National School Breakfast Week.

This year’s theme is “Clue In”; throughout the week, Child Nutrition Services – or CNS – staff members will hand out daily prizes while introducing new menu items each day to keep the excitement going.

In addition, there will be grand prize drawings for students who participate in breakfast each day during the week. The grand prizes include headphones, iPads, scooters and more.

National School Breakfast Week is a federally funded program that was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the benefits of breakfast. Research conducted by the National Biotechnology and Information confirms that children with higher intakes of key vitamins and nutrients excel at school. In short: children who start their day with a healthy breakfast are more likely to score higher on tests, perform better in reading and math and have a higher level of focus in class.

Through the ordering of food and supplies for school kitchens, BCSD’s cafeterias have collected Cool School perks or points that can be used to obtain items from various vendors at no further cost. Points have been used to purchase the gifts that can be won during National School Breakfast Week.

Thank you, BCSD CNS, for all that you do!
