student flashing a peace sign

Throughout Berkeley County School District, our teachers conduct lessons that make a difference. On the 120th day of school, Michael Silvestri's first grade class at Foxbank Elementary cracked the case on how to read, write and count to 120.

Who: Michael Silvestri and his first grade class

Where: Foxbank Elementary

What: While the 100th day of school is a big deal for kindergarteners, in first grade the state standard is for students to be able to read, write and count to 120. As such, on the 120th day of school, Michael Silvestri's classroom transformed into a super secret spy headquarters and his students had to complete six activities.

  • Use a spy pen to write numbers up to 120

  • Use ten-sided dice to add up to 10 twelve different ways

  • Use a magnifying glass to read place value blocks

  • Bowling to 120

  • 120 Day Mystery Picture

  • Cup stacking with 120 cups

Students recorded the success of their individual missions in an activity pack. As a group project, the secret agents had to uncover 120 Hershey kisses hidden around their classroom and matched the number on the bottom of each Hershey kiss to a 120 chart.

Results: Mission accomplished! Students were highly engaged in the lesson and successfully completed their spy-themed activities that met the state standards of reading, writing and counting to 120.
