Coach Peace in a huddle

Berkley High's girls basketball coach, Crystal Peace, is getting her flowers! After a tremendous season that ended with the Lady Stags winning their first-ever state title, Peace was selected by the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association as the SCACA Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

"As a proud Berkeley High alumna, Crystal embodies what it means to give back to your roots—leading our program from the sidelines after once playing in the same uniform," Brian Welch, Berkeley High's athletic director, said. "She is the living embodiment of 'Students Today, Leaders Tomorrow, Stags Forever!'"

To reflect on this recognition and her career so far, we sat down with Peace for a quick Q & A.

The following answers have been edited for conciseness and clarity.

What does it mean to you to be named the SCACA’s Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year?

"Being named the SCACA Girls Basketball Coach of the Year is a tremendous honor, and I am truly humbled by this recognition. I did not anticipate this at all, and knowing that my fellow coaches from across the state chose to nominate and select me for this award is incredibly meaningful."

How has Berkeley High supported you during your coaching career?

"Throughout my coaching career, BHS has been a pillar of support for me. They have witnessed the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. Their unwavering support for my coaching philosophy and their dedication to the coaching staff and me each and every day has been invaluable."

What are some life lessons coaching basketball has taught you?

"Coaching has instilled in me the importance of perseverance. As the saying goes, 'Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.' Sometimes the results may take longer to manifest, but no matter the circumstances, it is crucial to stand by your beliefs and continue pushing forward."

What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting out in their coaching career?

"To a coach just starting out, I encourage you to fully embrace the journey and make the expansion of your knowledge and skills a top priority. Don’t hesitate to connect with experienced coaches who can provide valuable insights! When challenges arise, remember your 'why.'"

Anything else, Coach Peace?

"Always ensure that your players know you care about them as individuals first. While the world of sports may eventually fade, the life lessons you share will create a lasting impact on their lives."
