*Coach Gerald Moody
Coach Moody began his coaching career at Berkeley in 1953. He won a total of 269 games…213 of them over 2 stints with the Stags. Coach Moody also led the Stags to 2 State Championships & 7 Lower State Championships in football. He also served as Athletics Director & coached other sports such as basketball, golf & track…he led the Stags baseball team to the lower state championships in 1961 & 1963. Coach Moody retired after the 1988 season. He was the recipient of the Order of the Palmetto & is a member of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The football field at Berkeley is also named in his honor. Coach Moody passed away in 1996.
*David Anderson
David would have been a member of the 1952 class of Berkeley High School. He was a 3 sport star lettering in football, basketball & baseball for Berkeley. David was a junior quarterback & defensive back for the 1950 Stags football team. He suffered a life ending injury while making a tackle during a game that season & passed away in September of 1950 at the age of just 16. David also excelled in the classroom, served on student council & was the epitome of a Berkeley Stag student athlete.
*Henry Bonner
Mr. Bonner came to Berkeley as a young boy in 1927 and actually lived on the campus when his father, W.M. Bonner, became principal and Moncks Corner Area Superintendent. He was captain of the basketball team & quarterback of the football team graduating in 1942. Mr. Bonner was voted class president & most athletic by his classmates. After serving in the Army during WWII, he played basketball for Erskine College. Mr. Bonner went on to serve as principal and Area Superintendent of Macedonia schools before becoming Berkeley County Superintendent in 1959 & serving in that capacity for 28 years. Mr. Henry Erskine Bonner loved his Berkeley Stags & rarely missed an athletic event. At his funeral in 2007, the Berkeley fight song “Corn, Corn” was played at the Presbyterian Church for the processional.
*Jim Bradley
Mr. Bradley came to Berkeley from McCormick, SC in the early 1930’s and served as Principal from 1939 until 1965. He was a 3 year letterman in boxing at the University of South Carolina & was a member of the football team. In the early part of his tenure at Berkeley High School he coached football, baseball & basketball. During his time as coach, Berkeley won two district championships in football and another in basketball. The baseball field is named in his honor. Mr. Bradley was “The Man” at Berkeley High and is revered by the students who attended during those 26 years. He was known to be tough, but fair. Mr. Bradley passed away in 1990 at the age of 81.
*Harold Staley
Harold graduated from Berkeley in 1964. He lettered in football for 3 years & in baseball for 4 years. He also lettered in basketball & was a member of the 1963 lower state championship baseball team. Harold was also voted “Most Popular” by his classmates. Harold is probably best known for his service as president of the Berkeley High Booster Club as well as his dedication to the youth programs in Moncks Corner. Each football season, we celebrate “Harold Staley Youth Night” in his honor. Harold Staley passed away in 1997.
*Usha Gilmore
Usha graduated from Berkeley in 1996. She was All-State & All Conference in basketball for 4 years. Usha was named Ms. Basketball and the 1996 Gatorade Basketball State Player of the Year. She also lettered in volleyball, track & softball for the Stags. Usha attended Rutgers University where she was on the Big East All Rookie team and then played in the Final Four with the Scarlet Knights in the 1999-2000 season. She later played professionally in the WNBA for the Indiana Fever.
*Ryan Stewart
Ryan graduated from Berkeley in 1991. He lettered 3 years in football, basketball & track for the Stags. Ryan played in the 1990 Shrine Bowl, was a consensus top 5 player from the state of South Carolina & a Parade All American. Ryan starred collegiately at Georgia Tech where he was All ACC & captain for the Yellow Jackets his senior year. He also won the ACC Community Service Award twice. He was a 3rd round pick in the 1995 NFL draft & played 5 seasons for the Detroit Lions.
*Mike Dingle
Mike graduated from Berkeley in 1987. As a running back, he led the Stags to the 1986 Lower State Championship & a berth in the State Title game. Mike scored 78 total Touchdowns for the Stags over his career…which was a state record at the time & still ranks in the top 10 today. Mike also played on the 1987 Berkeley basketball team that advanced to the Lower State Championship as well as running track. He played in the 1986 Shrine Bowl & then played collegiately for South Carolina & professionally for the Cincinnati Bengals.
*Benji Motte
Benji graduated from Berkeley in 1982. He was an All-Area selection at wide receiver & All-Low country defensive back for the 1981 State Championship football team. Benji won track state titles in the long jump and the triple jump on his way to being a High School All-American in track & field as well as the Post & Courier’s 1982 High School Athlete of the Year. He went to Furman on a scholarship where he lettered all four years in football & track. Benji was a starter on the 1985 1-AA National Runner up Paladin football team & a 12 time All Southern Conference track & field performer.
*Clarence Williams
Clarence was a 1973 graduate of Berkeley. In 1971, he was All Conference in football & in 1972 he was All State & named to the Shrine Bowl team. He lettered in football, basketball & track for the Stags. He was a member of a record setting 880 relay team as well as setting individual records in the broad jump & low hurdles. Clarence went on to star in the backfield for University of South Carolina & led the Gamecocks in rushing in 1975. He was drafted by the NFL’s San Diego Chargers in 1977 & was a member of the 1982 Super Bowl Champion Washington Redskins. Clarence Williams died tragically in 1994.
*Ron Aiken
Ron is a 1973 graduate of Berkeley. He was a lineman for the 9-1 1972 Stags football team and was voted “Most Improved” by his teammates. Ron went on to star collegiately for North Carolina A & T earning All Conference honors playing guard and center along the way. Ron then moved onto the coaching ranks…he has coached in high school & for collegiate programs such as Iowa, Texas, Vanderbilt & Oregon. Coach Ron Aiken was named 2002 NCAA Division 1 Assistant Coach of the Year. Ron also coached 6 seasons as the defensive line coach for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.
*Butch Watson
Butch is a 1966 graduate of Berkeley. He helped lead the Stags football team to the 1964 & 1965 Lower State Championships & berths in the State Title games each year. Butch lettered all 4 years in football, basketball & baseball. He was named All-State in football in 1965 & played in the 1965 Shrine Bowl and the 1966 North/South All Star games. He accepted a football scholarship to the University of South Carolina. Later, Butch served as President of the Berkeley High Booster Club.
*Francis Wilson
Francis is a 1960 graduate of Berkeley. He lettered in football, basketball, baseball & track…he was a quarterback on the 1959 football team that claimed the Lower State Championship & advanced to the State Title game. Francis played in the 1959 Shrine Bowl & the 1960 North/South All Star games. He accepted a football scholarship to Clemson. Later, Francis coached @ Berkeley and was an assistant for the 1981 State Championship football team.
*Watson Mims
Watson is a member of the 1953 Berkeley graduating class. He starred in football, basketball & baseball. In football, he was named team Captain and recognized as “best tackler” as a senior. Watson was an All-District team selection in basketball in 1952 and 1953. In baseball, Watson was team Captain his senior season and led the team in batting. Watson enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after high school where he played and excelled on Marine Corps baseball and basketball teams. After serving his country, he returned to Moncks Corner and played semi-pro baseball in the Palmetto League and semi-pro basketball in the Eastern Carolina League. Throughout his life, Watson has remained a huge supporter of Berkeley Athletics and has served as the football Chain Crew Captain since the late 1980’s. He has also served as American Legion Post 126 Athletic Officer for American Legion baseball during the last 3 decades.
*Bobby Dellinger
Bobby is part of the Berkeley class of 1951. He lettered in football, basketball & baseball. He was captain of the 1950 football team in which he led the Stags in total points scored with 113 & was given All State honors. Bobby helped lead the Stags to the Lower State Title game that season. He was the Vice President of his class & voted “Most Athletic” by his peers…he was also MVP of the North/South All Star game. Bobby went on to play football collegiately at the University of Georgia where he led the Bulldogs in scoring during the 1952 season.

Marsha Williams
Marsha graduated from Berkeley in 1989. She lettered in basketball & softball for the Stags. She left Berkeley’s basketball program as the scoring & rebounding leader as she averaged more than 19 points & 12 rebounds for her career. After Marsha’s senior year she was named All Region, All State and All American by Parade Magazine as well as Converse. She also competed in the Junior Olympics before moving on to play for the University of South Carolina where she was a one thousand point scorer. In 1991, Marsha was named South Carolina Female Amateur Athlete of the Year.
Albert “Snookey” Boyt, Jr
Snookey Boyt graduated with the Berkeley class of 1950. He lettered in football, basketball & baseball for the Stags. As quarterback in 1949, he helped lead the football team to a 10-1 record & a District Championship before falling in the Lower State Championship game. Snookey was named MVP of that ‘49 football season. He also helped lead the Stags baseball team to a district title and was voted Most Athletic in his class.
Ben Fleming, Sr
Ben Fleming, Sr graduated from Berkeley in 1958. He earned varsity letters in baseball, basketball, football & track. He was a member of district championship teams in football, basketball & baseball and he helped set a track state record for the half mile relay in 1957. Ben was an all conference performer in basketball & was MVP of the 1958 North/South All Star football game. He was awarded a full scholarship to play football at the University of South Carolina & graduated with a degree in Accounting.
Rodney Mack
Rodney Mack graduated from Berkeley in 1985. He lettered in football & basketball for the Stags. Rodney starred at defensive end for the football team & was MVP of the 1984 North/South All Star game. He helped lead the Stags hoops team to the 1985 region championship while averaging more than 26 points & 13 rebounds per game. Rodney was named the region player of the year as well as the Post & Courier Athlete of the Year in ’84-’85. Rodney went on to play basketball for SC State where he led the Bulldogs in scoring & rebounding on their way to the 1989 MEAC championship. He still holds the MEAC tournament record for rebounds in a game with 25.
John Rivers
John Rivers was a 1988 graduate of Berkeley. He lettered in football, basketball & track for the Stags. He helped lead the football team to the 1986 State Championship game while catching more than 40 passes for over 900 yards & 6 TDs. John also led the basketball team to the 1987 Lower State Title game while averaging more than 18 points & 12 rebounds per game. For those accomplishments he was named the 1986-’87 Post & Courier Athlete of the Year. John went on to star collegiately at Virginia Tech where he played football & basketball. He caught 9 TD passes as a tight end on the football team & ranks in the top 10 all time in rebounds & blocked shots on the hardwood for the Hokies.
Allen Watson
Allen Watson started coaching at Berkeley Training School after attending Allen University on a football scholarship. He coached football as well as boys & girls basketball. Coach Watson led Berkeley Training School to state championships in all 3 sports as well as numerous district titles in his time there. He came over to Berkeley High in 1970 when Berkeley Training school closed. Coach Watson coached multiple sports for the Stags including head JV football coach & head track coach. He led the JV football team to an undefeated season in 1983. Coach Watson retired in 1988.
Rusty Williams
Rusty Williams graduated from Berkeley in 1995. He lettered in football, basketball & track. Rusty helped lead the Stags football team to region championships in 1993 & ’94 as well as the State Championship & a national ranking in ’94. He rushed for more than two thousand yards & scored 28 TDs as a senior earning him Sports Report & USA Today’s South Carolina state football player of the year in 1994. Rusty was also a Super Prep All American & played in the Shrine Bowl. He played collegiately for Auburn where he rushed for more than a thousand yards & scored 11 TDs.
Mike Brown
Mike Brown is a member of the Berkeley class of 1967. He earned 12 total varsity letters in football, basketball, track & baseball. Mike was a member of the 1965 & ’66 lower state championship football teams. He was named All State his junior & senior years as well as being named the state offensive player of the year in 1966. Mike played in the North/South & Shrine Bowl All Star games. He then went on to play football collegiately at Gardner Webb.
Rufus Wofford, Sr
Mr. Wofford came to Moncks Corner in 1939 after graduating from Wofford College where he was captain of the football team. He coached varsity football along with Jim Bradley from 1940-1953 & was a coach for 4 district championship teams in the 40’s. He was an assistant for Coach Moody’s first team in 1953 & that was the first Stag team to reach the state championship game. Mr. Wofford also coached boys & girls basketball during his time before becoming principal of Berkeley Elementary in 1945 and serving in that capacity through 1964. He then served as Moncks Corner Area Superintendent from 1965-1968 before becoming Berkeley County Assistant Superintendent. He held that position until his untimely death in 1974.

Kathy Brittle Jones
Kathy graduated from Berkeley in 1976. She lettered in tennis, basketball & track for the Stags…she was a two-time all region performer in basketball & voted most athletic in her class. Kathy attended Guilford College on scholarship where she played basketball & softball all four years as well as tennis for one year. She then returned to Berkeley where she’s coached basketball, tennis & softball for the Stags…twice being named region coach of the year in basketball as well as having a near 70% winning percentage. Kathy retired after 36 years of teaching/14 years of coaching at Berkeley.
David Barnett
David graduated from Berkeley in 1982. He lettered in football all four years setting numerous records along the way & leading the Stags to the Big 16 state championship in 1981. He scored 43 touchdowns in his Berkeley career & was the first back to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. David was named First team All-Conference, First team All-Lowcountry, Loucountry Back of the Year, a member of the 1981 Shrine Bowl team & an Addidas All-American High School Football Team selection. David attended Clemson on a football scholarship where he played fullback for the Tigers & was a member of the 1982 ACC championship team.
Don Brown, Jr
Don was a 1965 graduate of Berkeley. He lettered in baseball, basketball, football & track for the Stags. As a half back on the football team, Don scored all 14 points in a 14-13 win over Summerville that clinched the 1963 region championship. He helped lead the Stags baseball team to the 1963 lower state title as a shortstop. Don was voted “Most Athletic” in his senior class. He attended Western Carolina on a football scholarship, but his career ended prematurely due to injury. After serving in the military, Don returned to the area & served on the chain crew for football games for several years.
Mal Lawyer
Mal graduated from Berkeley in 1996. He was a 3 sport star in basketball, football & track. Mal was a member of the 1994 state championship football team as a standout receiver hauling in 2 TD receptions in the state title game. He ended his Stags career with more than 80 receptions, 1200 yards & 19 total TDs earning All-Region & Shrine Bowl honors along the way. Lawyer was also a member of the record holding 4×4 relay track team. He went on to star in football at Clemson where he hauled in 99 receptions during his career which was good enough for 8th all time when he graduated. Mal is now an assistant football coach for the Stags as well as head JV basketball coach.
Dr. Pete Myers, IV
Pete was a 1963 graduate of Berkeley. He lettered in baseball, basketball, football & track for the Stags. Pete was a lineman for the 1960 state championship football team as well as a pitcher for the 1961 & 1963 lower state championship baseball teams. He was named an All-Region performer in football, basketball & baseball his senior year. In track, Pete finished 2nd in the 1963 state meet in the pole vault. He then went on to Clemson where he lettered 3 times in baseball as a pitcher & outfielder. Upon returning to Moncks Corner after college, Pete was active in the BHS booster club, still serves on the chain crew for football games & has coached multiple age groups in baseball ranging from Little League to American Legion.
Clark Simpkins
Clark graduated from Berkeley in 1950. He lettered in football, basketball & baseball for the Stags. After serving in Korea & earning his degree from the Citadel, he returned to BHS in 1957 as a PE teacher. He served as Coach Moody’s top assistant in football, including the 1960 state championship team, as well as serving as head coach for baseball, men’s & women’s basketball and track during the 50’s & 60’s. Clark then served as assistant principal before becoming Head Principal of Berkeley in 1965 & he served in that role for several years. All in all, his time at Berkeley spanned 4 different decades.
Jimmy Villeponteaux
Jimmy graduated from Berkeley in 1959. He lettered in track & football for the Stags, but the gridiron is where he made his mark. Jimmy played on the offensive & defensive lines for the Stags…he was team captain his junior & senior years. Jimmy played in the Senior Bowl & was voted Most Athletic in his class. Coach Moody was quoted as saying Jimmy was probably the best lineman he ever coached & in part because he gave it his all on every play in games & practices. He went to Newberry College & starred in football there as well, later having a scholarship named in his honor. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Jimmy Villeponteaux went missing in action in Vietnam in May of 1966.
1960 State Championship Football Team
The 1960 football team was the first Berkeley team to win the State Championship in football or any sport. They are one of only two teams to finish with a perfect record going 13-0. The 1960 Stags outscored their opponents 424-46 while posting 7 shutouts. They only trailed in one game & the most points surrendered were 13. The Stags had one Shrine Bowler, one North/South All Star & 6 players named All Lower State. They were coached by Gerald Moody & his assistant was Clark Simpkins. The team manager was Stewart LeCroy. 2015 Berkeley High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class
Crystal Peace
Crystal graduated from Berkeley in 2000. She was a 5 time letter winner in basketball for the Stags. Crystal was a member of two region title teams as well as leading the Stags to the lower state championship game her senior year. She was named All Region & All State her junior & senior years. She was also named Lowcountry Player of the Year & represented South Carolina in the SC vs NC All Star game her senior year. After being named a Top 5 senior in SC, Crystal attended Liberty to continue her playing career. Crystal then got into the coaching ranks after graduating from Liberty & is head coach of the Lady Stags.
Donate Addison
Donate is a 1995 graduate of Berkeley. He was a 3 sport star for the Stags in football, basketball & track. Donate was All Region in both football & basketball, but it was on the gridiron where he made a name for himself. As quarterback, he led the Stags to back to back region titles & a perfect 15-0 mark in 1994 en route to a state championship. Donate was selected for the North/South All Star game & was considered a Top 100 player. He was 26-3 overall as starting QB for the Stags. He went on to attend SC State to play football. Donate then served our country in the US Air Force for 10 years.
Denny Hill
Denny graduated from Berkeley in 1961. He made up one half of the “terrible twins” on the 1959 & 1960 Stag football teams. Denny helped lead the Stags to a 25-1 record those two years. The only loss was in the state title game in 1959, but they bounced back to win it all in perfect fashion in 1960. Denny played on both sides of the ball scoring 42 points his senior year while playing on a defense that only surrendered 46 all season on its way to 7 shutouts. Denny was named All Lower State for that 1960 season. He had several offers to play college football, but he decided to go to the work for the railroad instead.
Renny Hill
Renny is a member of the Berkeley class of 1961. He makes up the other half of the “terrible twins” who helped lead the 1959 & 1960 Stag football teams to 2 region titles & one state championship. Renny also played on both sides of the ball and scored 60 points on offense as a half back on his way to being named All Lower State. In one of the closest games of the year, an 8-0 win at Summerville, Renny scored the only TD of the game. Like his brother, Renny had several offers to play collegiately, but opted to join the Army instead. Once he was done in the service, he went to work for the railroad as well.
Bobby Mitchell
Bobby graduated from Berkeley in 1957. He racked up 10 letters spanning 4 sports for the Stags. Bobby was a member of 8 different district championship teams in football, basketball & baseball as well a member of the lower state championship 1953 football team. Bobby was named All District twice in basketball & won the lower state championship in the high jump for the track team in 1957. He went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina before serving 23 years in the US Marine Corps. After retiring, Bobby served on the chain gang for football games for 20 years as well as being heavily involved with the American Legion baseball program.
James Quinn
James is a member of the 1981 graduating class. He starred in football & track for the Stags. As a running back, he saw his career cut short due to injury before his senior year, but he was able to make up for it on the track. James was a 3 time All Region performer in 2 events. He won individual state titles in the 110 High Hurdles & 300 Intermediate Hurdles. He was named All State & ranked top 5 nationally in the 110 High Hurdles. James then starred at the Baptist College where he qualified for nationals all 4 years & earned All America honors his junior year. He participated in the 1984 Olympic trials before falling short due to injury. James later coached track at Fort Dorchester High School.

Patreece Copeland
Patreece is a 1994 Berkeley graduate. She lettered in volleyball, basketball and track & field. She was named All Region at least once in all 3 sports. In track, Patreece was named All State twice in three different events…the high jump, triple jump & long jump. In 1993, she ranked #2 nationally in the high jump. Patreece went on to Auburn to compete and was a two time All SEC performer & placed 3rd in the high jump in the 1995 USA Junior Nationals. After completing her degree, Patreece returned to the low country and has coached basketball and track & field here at Berkeley.
Jerry Crady
Jerry graduated from Berkeley in 1954. He lettered in football and baseball for the Stags. He made a name for himself in football as a true 48 minute man…he never left the field. He averaged more than 8 yards per carry as a fullback on an offense that averaged just over 30 points a game. He was also the leading tackler on a defense that surrendered just 4 points per game. He helped lead Berkeley to the 1953 lower state title by beating Summerville in the famous Montana shootout overtime game. For his efforts, Jerry signed a scholarship to play for Frank Howard at Clemson.
Tory Liferidge
Tory is a 1995 graduate of Berkeley. He lettered in football & track for the Stags. Tory helped lead the Stags football team to back to back region titles as well the 1994 undefeated State Championship. Tory was a team captain playing on both sides of the ball. As a tight end, he had over 500 yards receiving & 5 touchdowns during his senior year. He was named a Top 100 tight end and selected to the North/South All Star game. Tory earned a scholarship to Duke University where he lettered all four years for the Blue Devils as well as being named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Tory recently moved back to Moncks Corner and is the pastor of Grace Reformed Episcopal Church.
Steve Ryan
Steve graduated from Berkeley in 1974. He starred in football & baseball for the Stags. On the gridiron, Steve played quarterback & defensive back. He helped lead the 1972 team to a 9-1 record. For his efforts that season, Steve was named All State as well as being selected to the Shrine Bowl. Steve started his collegiate career at North Carolina A&T, but then transferred to Clemson. As a defensive back, he led the ACC in interceptions with 6 in 1977. He then helped lead the Tigers to the 1978 ACC Championship.
1981 State Championship Football Team
The 1981 football team was the second Berkeley team to win the State Championship in football. The Stags won South Carolina’s first ever 4-A Division 1 “Big 16” state title. The team finished 12-2, but they were able to avenge both regular season losses in the playoffs against Sumter & Summerville. They knocked off previously unbeaten, Gaffney, 18-15 in the title game in Columbia. The 1981 Stags had one Shrine Bowler, two North/South All Stars & 7 players named All Conference. 2017 Berkeley High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class
*Rufus Wofford, Jr. (1961 graduate) – 4 sport standout at BHS in baseball, basketball, track, and football, earning 15 total letters. Quarterbacked the 1960 State Championship football team and played on the 1960 Lower State Championship baseball team.
*Michael Varner (1979 graduate) – 2 way player in football at linebacker and fullback; 4 year letterman and 3 year starter. 1978 Shrine Bowl selection – played in all but 15 seconds of the game and had a key interception late in the game to seal the win for SC. Played in all but 1 game during college career at The Citadel; named Tri-Captain of Bulldog team his senior year in 1982.
*Anita Kidd (1984 graduate) – 4 year starter in basketball and softball, played 2 years of tennis and 1 year of volleyball for the Stags. All-Region in basketball. At Baptist College, played 4 years of basketball and volleyball and 2 years of tennis.
*Kevin Rivers (1997 graduate) – Started on the offensive line on both the 1994 and 1996 State Championship football teams. Also played basketball and ran track. 1996 Shrine Bowl selection. Played collegiately at the University of South Carolina where he was named Freshman All-SEC and Sporting News Freshman All-American.
*Derrick Dingle (1995 graduate) – All-State linebacker on 1994 State Championship football team. Also played basketball and ran track. 1994 Shrine Bowl selection. Had a distinguished college career at SC State University where he was team MVP his sophomore year and led the Bulldogs in tackles his sophomore and junior seasons.
2018 Berkeley High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class
Walter Bonner, Sr. – Moncks Corner Area Superintendent from 1928 – 1966 whose staunch support of BHS Athletics laid the groundwork for the Stags’ success during the 1950’s and 1960’s. The football stadium at BHS is named in his honor.
Buck Wofford – 4 sport Stag athlete – football, baseball, basketball, track. Longtime teacher, assistant football and head boys track coach at BHS. Football State Champion both as a player (1960) and as a coach (1981). Coached a number of individual State Champions in track.
Deborah Scott – 3 year letter winner in both basketball and track for the Stags in the early 1970’s. Deborah was a conference representative in the running broad jump at the Junior Olympics competition for the 1972 track season. She was the top scorer and team MVP in basketball. Her senior season, she averaged 16 points and 15 rebounds per game. Played basketball collegiatelyfor one season at SC State.
Brent Stone – 1980’s standout in baseball and basketball for BHS. 3 year letter winner in basketball; Region Champion in 1987. 4 year letter winner in baseball; Named All-Region, All-Lowcountry, and All-State as a senior. Played baseball at Coastal Carolina, earning 4 letters. At BHS, was a teacher, coached multiple sports, and later served as assistant principal.
Doug Langenfeld – 3 sport Stag athlete – football, basketball and track. Standout in football, played multiple positions. Played on 1996 state championship football team; 1998 North-South All-star game selection. Member of Reedley Junior College National Championship team and named 3rd team All-American in 2002. Inducted into Reedley’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. Transferred to Auburn University and was starting defensive end on the Tigers’ SEC Championship team that finished with a finalranking of # 2 in 2004.
Amanda Hill James – Standout volleyball player for BHS. Played varsity as a 7th grader, earning 6 letters. Led the team in kills, serving percentage and aces 4 years; team MVP for 3 years; led the Lady Stags to a Region Championship in 2006. Played collegiately at Charleston Southern University, earning numerous honors; inducted into CSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. Played professionally for 2 years in Sweden.

*Bubba Hightower (Class of 1970) – Standout golfer for the Stags. 4 year letter winner. Played collegiately at Baptist College (team MVP in 1970), Anderson College, and the University of South Carolina. SC Amateur Champion. U.S. Amateur Championship qualifier. Won numerous local and statewide tournaments. PGA club professional who played the mini-tours attempting to qualify for the PGA tour. Heritage Golf Classic participant. National Long Driving Championship District finalist. “A legend in Lowcountry golf.”
*Doug Stewart (Class of 1988) – Football standout at BHS. Played on 1986 Region and Lower State Championship team. Led Berkeley to an unexpected 8-win season as a Senior in 1987, rushing for 1459 yards and 14 TDs. 3-time Post and Courier Offensive Player of the Week. Post and Courier All-Lowcountry team selection. Honorable mention All-State and North-South All-star game alternate. Played at Newberry, lettering in 1988 and transferred to SC State where he suffered a career ending knee injury. Doug later was one-half of the 2 Live Stews sports talk radio show with his brother, Ryan, a 2012 BHS Hall of Fame inductee.
*Mike Wilkerson (Class of 1991) – 3 year letter winner in both track and football. 1991 All-Region in football. 1991 North-South All-star game selection. 1991 Post and Courier/Palmetto Touchdown Club Offensive Lineman of the Year. 1991 Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award winner. 1990 BHS Academic Award. 1990 and 1991 BHS Best Offensive Lineman Award winner. 1990 Berkeley County Discus Champion. 1991 High School Sports Report Top 100 Honoree. 1991 – 1992 Mr. BHS. Played football at The Citadel – 3 year letterman (1992 – 1995). Member of the 1992 Southern Conference Championship team. 1995 Ann Seignious Award for Academic and Football Excellence, 4-time recipient of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, 2-time named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll. Offensive line coach for Berkeley’s 1996 State Championship team. Currently Principal at Berkeley Middle School.
*Willis High (Class of 1997) – Basketball, football and track athlete. 3 year letter winner in football. Receiver and punter on 1994 State Championship football team. Varsity track letter winner in 400 hurdles and high jump. 4 year Varsity basketball letter winner and starter, scoring 1000+ points. Team MVP, High School Sports Report All-Lowcountry and All-State in 1997. All-Regional selection for Charleston Sharks AAU team that advanced to AAU finals. Played basketball at Wofford College. Served as head basketball coach at St. John’s Christian Academy and as an assistant coach at several Charleston area schools over the years.
*Shon Gray (Class of 1988) – 4 year letter winner in both softball and basketball . 4-time All-Region in basketball; All-State in 1988. 2 year starter at USC-Spartanburg. Played on 1992 and 1993 MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) conference championship teams. Named to the All-Garden City Classic and MEAC All-Tournament teams in 1993.

*Burnett Taylor (Class of 1961) – 3 year letter winner in both track and football. 2 way starter at fullback and left defensive tackle on the 1960 State Championship football team. In the State Championship victory over York, rushed for 105 yards and had one receiving touchdown. Scored 55 points during the 1960 season. First-team Lower State All-Star Team selection and a Shrine Bowl selection in 1960.
*Anthony (A.J.) Johnson (Class of 1982) – 2 year letter winner in both track and football. Best Tackler team award winner on the 1981 State Championship football team. Second team Post-Courier All-Lowcountry, Post-Courier All-Area, and All-Region team selection in 1981. Walk-on at Clemson University who earned a scholarship and was a 3 year letter winner and 2 year starter at Free Safety for the Tigers. Set a Clemson record for tackles in a season by a defensive back and earned State newspaper First-Team All-State, AP Honorable- Mention All-ACC, and AP and Football News Honorable- Mention All-America honors in 1985.
*Kevin Brown (Class of 1993) – 3 year letter winner in baseball and 4 year letter winner in both basketball and football. All-Region selection in football, basketball and baseball as a Senior. 1992 All-State in football and 1992 Shrine Bowl selection (could not participate due to injury). 4 year starter at quarterback for Catawba College where he passed for 4807 yards and 53 touchdowns. Named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and led the Chiefs to a conference championship and the # 4 ranking in NCAA Division-II in 1996. Assistant coach for Catawba College 1998 – 2001 and 2013 – 2017 and at Coastal Carolina University from 2002 – 2011. Assistant coach at BHS in 2018 and 2019.
*Linnell Lawrence Cooper (Class of 1994) – 4 year letter winner in both basketball and track. State champion in the 100 and 300 hurdles in 1993. She and fellow Hall of Famer, Patreece Copeland, finished 4th in the state as a team in 1993. 1993 Lowcountry Female All-Star Team selection. Named 1993 track team MVP, 1993 McDonald’s Female Athlete of the Year, and 1993 Post-Courier Female Athlete of the Year. Ran track at SC State University and was 1996 team co-MVP and 1997 team MVP. MEAC Conference Champion in the 100 and 400 hurdles in 1996 and 1997.
*Denario Smalls (Class of 1997) – 3 sport Stag athlete – football, basketball and track. Football standout who played multiple positions on the 1994 and 1996 State Championship football teams. Named Palmetto Touchdown Club Defensive Player of the Year in 1996. Played football collegiately at East Tennessee State University where he earned First-Team All-Southern Conference honors 3 years and First-Team All-America as a Senior. Played professionally in the Arena Football League for 7 years earning Defensive Player of the Year with the Macon Knights in 2003. Formerly coached at the college level and currently serves as Head Track Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the football team at Cross High School.

*Tim Watson (Class of 1955) – 3 year letter winner in football, baseball, and basketball. A member of 5 different District 7 Class B championship teams in football, basketball and baseball and a member of the 1953 Class B Lower State Championship football team. Team Co-Captain of the 1955 District 7 Class B Championship basketball team. Coached for 34 years at the high school and college levels, including a stint at Berkeley from 1965 – 1968 where he served as the head basketball coach and was an assistant football coach for the Stags’ 1965 and 1966 Lower Atlantic 2A Conference Champion and 2A Lower State Championship football teams.
*Vinson (Vincent) Alfaro (Class of 1967) – 4 year letter winner in football and track letterman. 2-way player at fullback and defensive line and team Co-Captain of the 1965 and 1966 Lower Atlantic 2A Conference Champion and 2A Lower State Championship football teams. Scored 75 points during the 1966 season. First-Team Post-Courier All-Star team selection in 1965 and 1966 and a Second-Team All-State team selection in 1966. Served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Vietnam War and was recipient of the Bronze Star.
*Spencer Scott (Class of 1987) – 2-sport letter winner in football and basketball. A member of Berkeley’s 1986 Region 6-4A Champion and Division II-4A Lower State Championship football team. Named to the All-County team in 1986. Played football collegiately at The Citadel, the first local player to sign with Coach Charlie Taaffe. Lettered 3 years for the Bulldogs and was a Southern Conference Second-Team All-Conference selection in 1989 and 1990. Has served as a youth football coach with the Moncks Corner Recreation Department, winning 2 championships as head coach of the Moncks Corner Bantams.
*Dana Copeland (Class of 1997) – lettered in basketball, cross country and track. Named top defensive player on Berkeley’s 1996 Region 6-4A Champion basketball team. In a track career spanning from 1993 – 1997, won multiple region championships in various events, was a Region MVP, and was All-State in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Competed in track and field collegiately at Clemson where she was a member of the 1999 ACC Outdoor Championship team. Co-founder and events coordinator of the Dave Copeland Foundation and currently teaches at Berkeley Middle School.
*Andre Ellington (Class of 2008) – multiple letter winner in football, basketball, and track. A member of Berkeley’s 2007 Region 7-4A Champion football team. Reached the Division II-4A Lower State Championship football game in 2006 and 2007. First-Team Post-Courier All-Lowcountry team selection, Shrine Bowl team selection and ESPN/Under /Armour All-American game participant in 2007. Played football collegiately at Clemson earning numerous honors and leaving his name among the leaders in school history in several statistical categories. Played in the NFL from 2013 – 2017. In 2014, was co-founder of the Ellington Elite Football Camp, a free football skills camp for youth, held each summer at Berkeley High School.

*Rodney Sabiston (Class of 1957) – 4 year letter winner in football, baseball, and basketball. A member of 7 different District 7 Class B championship teams in football, basketball, and baseball. Team Co-Captain and MVP of the 1957 District 7 Class B Championship basketball team. Named to the 1957 All-District basketball team. Walked on and made the baseball team as a freshman at Clemson University before transferring to LSU to complete his degree.
*Joe Harnage (Class of 1976) – Letter winner in tennis, basketball, and football. Number 1 player on Berkeley’s inaugural tennis team in 1975. Played tennis collegiately at Francis Marion University where he lettered 4 years and was team Co-Captain as a senior. Has served as head coach of the BHS girls tennis team over 20 years and has also coached the boys team. In 2019, the Berkeley County School Board voted to name the new tennis complex at BHS the “Joe Harnage Tennis Complex” in his honor.
*Will Swicord (Class of 1990) – 2-sport letter winner in football and golf. Football standout at linebacker from 1986 – 1989. Member of the 1986 Region 6-4A and Division I-4A Lower State Championship football team. In 1988 and 1989 had 250 total tackles and was an All-Region and Post-Courier All-Lowcountry selection both years. All-State selection in 1988 and North-South All-Star game selection in 1989. Recruited by multiple schools, he lettered at Furman and was a member of Furman’s 1990 Southern Conference championship team. Transferred to the University of South Carolina and played for the Gamecocks in 1991 and 1992.
*Jabari Levey (Class of 2002) – 3-sport letter winner in football, basketball, and track. 2002 State Champion in discus and All-Region and All-State track selection. Standout offensive lineman who recorded 100+ pancake blocks in the 2000 and 2001 seasons. In 2001 was selected team Captain and named to the All-Region, Post-Courier All-Lowcountry, and All-State teams. 2001 Post-Courier Lineman of the Year who played in the 2001 Shrine Bowl and was a top-5 lineman in the country. Played football at the University of South Carolina where he was a 3-year starter and team Captain. Played in the East-West Shrine All-Star game in 2005 and played professionally from 2006 – 2011 in the NFL, NFL-Europe, and the Canadian Football League.
*LeAnna Morrison (Class of 2011) – Arguably Berkeley’s most decorated athlete. Multi-year letter winner in track and basketball. Scored 1200+ career points, earned Post-Courier All-Lowcountry honors 3 seasons and an All-State selection in 2011. Track standout who won 13 State Championships over a 6-year career. 2011 State Champion in 4 events, setting the state record in the 400-meter hurdles. 2011 Post-Courier All-Lowcountry and Female Athlete of the Year, SC Gatorade Athlete of the Year, and SC Miss Track. Ran track 2 years at UNC-Charlotte where she set the Atlantic 10 record in the 400-meter hurdles and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Freshman team. Transferred to the University of South Carolina and played basketball during the 2013 – 2014 season. Ran track from 2014 – 2015 where she set a USC record in the triple-long jump. In 2016 ran track at the University of Hawaii at Manoa before transferring to Benedict College in 2017 where she played basketball on the Tigers’ 2017 SIAC Conference Champion team and was an All-Tournament team selection. Has served as track coach at Berkeley since 2017.

*Bill Shipley, Jr. (Class of 1971) – Multi-year letter winner in football and golf. 1970 football team MVP and Shrine Bowl selection. 1971 golf team MVP and Region medalist. Member of the golf team at Clemson University from 1972 – 1975. Lettered 3 years for the Tigers and was named to the ACC Golf Academic Honor Roll in 1974 and 1975.
*Kesha Peace (Class of 1992) – 4-year letter winner and 3-year starter in basketball. All-Region selection in 1991 and 1992. Led the team in points, assists, and steals per game in 1992. 4-year letter winner and starter in softball. All-Region selection in 1991 and 1992. Earned a full scholarship to Anderson University for basketball and softball.
*Rob Watson (Class of 1992) - 2-sport letter winner in basketball and baseball. Baseball standout who led the team in hitting from 1990 – 1992 and in pitching in 1991 and 1992. Named to the Lowcountry All-Star team in 1992. Lettered in baseball 4 years as a pitcher at the University of South Carolina where he had the distinction of earning the save for legendary Coach Ray Tanner’s first win at USC. SEC Academic Honor member from 1995 – 1997. Rob passed away in 2002, and in 2005, the pavilion at the Moncks Corner Youth Field was named the “Rob Watson Pavilion” in his memory.
*Thomas Brittle (Class of 2008) – 2-sport athlete in football and baseball. Member of the 2007 Region champion and 2006 and 2007 Lower State runner-up football teams. A team Captain, All-Region, and North-South All-Star game selection in 2007. In baseball, named to the All-Region and Post-Courier All-Lowcountry teams in 2007 and 2008. 2008 North-South All-Star game selection and was named team MVP. Played baseball collegiately at College of Charleston from 2008 – 2010 and at Clemson from 2011 – 2013. Was among the leaders in many statistical categories while at Clemson. Second-team All-ACC in 2012. Team Co-Captain and was named the ACC’s best defensive outfielder by Baseball America in 2013. 2012 and 2013 All-ACC Academic team member. Has served as athletic director, baseball, and football coach at the high school level and as an assistant baseball coach at the college level, currently at Tulane University.
*Bruce Ellington (Class of 2010) – 4-sport athlete in football, basketball, track, and baseball. Member of the 2007 and 2009 Region champion and 2009 Division II-4A State Championship football teams. All-Region, Post-Courier All-Lowcountry, “Mr. Football” finalist, and Shrine Bowl selection in 2009. In basketball, a member of the Lower State runner-up team in 2010, All-Region 2007 – 2010, and All-State and team Captain 2008 – 2010. SC Coaches Association 4A Player of the Year, Region 7-4A Player of the Year, and Post-Courier Athlete of the Year in 2010. Consensus 4-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American nominee. 2010 SC vs. NC All-Star game selection and was named MVP. Played basketball and football for 3 seasons at the University of South Carolina. Named to the Freshman All-SEC team in both basketball and football in 2011. Team leader in receiving in 2013. Named to the 2010 – 2011 SEC First Year Academic Honor Roll and SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll in 2011 and 2012. Drafted in the 4th round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2014 and played professionally until 2019.
