CBH Beta Club group shot 2022

Cane Bay High’s Beta Club has made a lot of gains this past year.

Their efforts have helped their 2022-2023 club sponsors, Lauren Buchan and Susannah Nutt, receive national recognition; the sponsors have recently been named recipients of the 2022-2023 John W. Harris Educator of Excellence awards.

The award is the highest honor offered to National Beta sponsors. Teachers from both Stratford High and Cane Bay High made this year’s list of recipients; these are two out of six schools in the entire state with teachers who were recognized for the 2022-2023 school year. Read full story.

While the award celebrates teachers, it also reflects the accomplishments of individual school Beta Clubs -- and Cane Bay High students had a very active year.

The club inducted more than 80 new members last year, and graduated 60. It has more than 150 current members.

The students received recognition for their service hours when Cane Bay High became designated as a 2023 All Star School, and each Beta Club member received a special pin. The school placed in the South Carolina Beta Convention: first in biomedical science (10th grade), first in English (10th grade) and third in English (ninth grade). The group was also among a handful of Berkeley County School District Beta Club programs that competed at the national convention.

Students are particularly proud of its community cleanup program, which is held once a month and involves the Beta Club students collecting litter on the trails throughout the Cane Bay community. Their next cleanup event takes place in October.

Cane Bay High Principal Dr. Glenda Levine said she is proud of the hard work Beta Club students have put into their school and their community.

“Although I have only been the principal of Cane Bay High for about three months now, I witnessed the work and wisdom of our Beta Club from the moment I arrived,” Levine said. “Not only have Beta Club members demonstrated strength in academic achievement, they have also shown strength in the areas of character, leadership, and service.  We are fortunate to have such a wonderful organization in our Cane Bay Cobra Family.”
