Berkeley County School District is excited to recognize Cane Bay High’s AFJROTC program for receiving the “Sword of Excellence” by the South Carolina Air Force Association.
Every year, the association – also known as AFA – presents this award to the most outstanding Air Force JROTC unit in the state, recognizing their achievements throughout the school year.
Cane Bay High’s program consists of 169 students led by Maj USAF (Ret) Christopher D. Perham, senior aerospace science instructor at the school.
"The Cadets in this program are truly the best and it shows every day,” Perham said. “They run the day-to-day operations, learning vital hands-on skills in communication, coordination, project management and leadership."
Cane Bay High's AFJROTC program has a lengthy list of accolades it has achieved over the past year or so. The program’s Drill and Raider teams have placed in multiple competitions. There are eight cadets who gained practical flight experience through the Lowcountry Inspirational Flight Training Camp, in which they fly with certified flight instructors to receive such training.
The cadets have stayed busy in different fundraisers and leadership events, in and out of school. They have been heavily involved in the community as well, participating in events such as the Adopt-A-Highway Initiative. The program also had 32 cadets who participated in the Bataan Death March Memorial Hike; they did a 14-mile hike through the Cane Bay community, raising $1,625 for Wounded Warriors – this particular event is coming back Saturday, April 12.
Among other accolades the program has achieved, senior Mya McColl received a big recognition last summer when she was named the Region 3 / Sub-Region 3 Outstanding Cadet of the Year. McColl is an active AFJROTC student at Cane Bay and is also enrolled in BCSD’s Berkeley Middle College program.
The cadets were officially presented with the Sword of Excellence at their school on April 2.
Congratulations, cadets!
