students doing STEM activities

Last week, Cainhoy Elementary’s third through fifth grade students enjoyed a day full of STEM lessons provided by the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Math.

GSSM’s “STEM Days on the Go” brings GSSM instructional team members into different classrooms around the state to do hands-on, standards-based STEM lessons with students. Ashley Seagle, Outreach Curriculum & Instruction Team Lead at GSSM, led Cainhoy Elementary students in three different interactive lessons during her time at the school last Thursday.

The third graders worked with Snap Circuits. The fourth graders learned about light and color with help from with different-colored flashlights. The fifth graders got a taste of rocket science by doing an experiment involving mixing water with Alka Seltzer inside of small capsules and seeing how the chemical reaction would force the capsules to briefly pop into the air (similar to how a rocket would launch).
