worker on roof

A milestone was reached and celebrated this fall the construction site of Carolyn Lewis School, set to open in the fall of 2023.

Edcon Inc., the general contractor building the K-8 school, hosted a topping off ceremony meant to recognize the dedication of those working on the project and celebrate various project accomplishments.

Edcon workers and site supervisors, flanked by Berkeley County School District personnel and local elected officials, applauded as the final beams of the school's roof were raised by a crane and secured into place.

Currently, the school is on target and within budget. Now that the roof is mostly complete, more of a focus will be placed on the inside of the school.

Carolyn Lewis School is named in honor of the late Carolyn Lewis-Craft, who was the first female BCSD board member. Mrs. Lewis-Craft served on the board for 32 years. She is the mother of Daniel Island School Principal Nancy Leigh and Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis.

Mrs. Leigh was at the ceremony and was among those inking signatures on the school's final A-frame beam.

Carolyn Lewis School is one of several capital improvement projects currently in the works for Berkeley County School District. Earlier this fall, BCSD announced a new school that will be built in the Nexton area. With the passing of the Education Capital Improvements Sales and Use Tax (www.bcsdschools.net/pennytax), several other projects aimed at accommodating rapid growth in the area became more of a reality.
