The holiday season might be flying by, but we hope you have the best Christmas ever! To get in the spirit, be sure to see our Celebrate the Season card at Santee Canal Park before December ends.
Thanks to our generous PTA, every Daniel Island School student was able to participate in the South Carolina Aquarium Outreach Programs - Coastal Creators, Deep Dive, and Environmental Scene Investigations! Elementary students enjoyed learning about salt marsh ecosystems and animal adaptations, while our middle schoolers investigated environmental problems in SC watersheds. Best of all, each program ended with interactions with live animals!
It's a great day to be an Osprey! Our middle school and elementary school students had the highest percentage of passed i-Ready math lessons for the month of November and have now secured both i-Ready Super School banners. This is the first time a school has been named an i-Ready Super School two months in a row since our middle schoolers won the banner last month, too!

Congratulations to Daniel Island School's 8th grader, Isabella Van Delden, for having her board design chosen by her peers to represent the school.
She painted the board for the 'Celebrate The Season Holiday Lights Festival' which will be on display beginning December 4th in Moncks Corner.
Students in Ms. Gaskins's class participated in a Barbie Bungee project recently. The goal was to give the action figure the thrill of its plastic life, by getting within 50 centimeters of the ground by calculating the maximum number of rubber bands in its bungee cord so that it doesn't hit the ground.!
Students in grades 6th - 8th enjoyed the final Fun Run of the day - the COLOR RUN!!
What great fun!!
What a great Fun Run!! Thank you to everyone that helped and donated to make it another successful year!
Aren't we lucky to live in a place where we can have an ice cream social - outside - in November? Thank you to everyone who came out to talk to Superintendent Dixon, district officials, and Philip Simmons schools administration at Philip Simmons High last night.

Students from Philip Simmons High School Spanish Honor Society visited several classes last week to teach a lesson about the Day of the Dead or Día de los Muertos. It is a traditional fiesta in honor of the deceased that is celebrated in Mexico and other parts of Latin America on Nov. 1st and 2nd.
Kindergarteners had some "fall" fun in ELA and math on Halloween after the character parade!
Third graders from Mrs. Anderson's, Mrs. Evans's and Ms. Aarons's classes used an alphanumeric grid and problem solving skills to solve riddles and find real world coordinates to complete a scavenger hunt at Pirate Park!
DIS second graders celebrated the 50th day of school with a 50's theme last week! The students learned about the 50's in their classroom lessons and ended the day with a 50's Sock Hop!
Who must stay and survive on a deserted island and who goes home? 7th graders in Ms. Mead's class constructed written arguments to decide!
Expanding on their knowledge of Force and Motion, Mr. Englehart's and Ms. Poolaw's 8th Grade Science classes rose to the challenge of building cars using only pasta and glue. The Pasta Cars that traveled the furthest off the ramp were crowned the Champs and awarded a golden toy Hummer. Students also voted on their favorite designed car.
Ms. Boone's class used text evidence from the novel The Secret Garden and worked in small groups to design, plan and create their own mini secret gardens using details from the end of the story. They will also watch two of the gardens grow to integrate with Science!
Many of our third grade classes have been learning about plant and animal life cycles and have also been learning about environments and how organisms survive in them. The unit began with a discussion about animals that are seen frequently on Daniel Island and what issues they cause. Students focused mainly on coyotes and alligators and researched sightings of them around the Charleston area. To wrap up the unit, the students created a product that keeps us and our animals safe from alligators and coyotes, without removing them from the habitats we share.
On Wednesday and Thursday, students were able to use the laser printer and the iTow truck to create visuals of their prototypes.
On Friday, student groups presented their product and their pitch to the “DIS Sharks”. Their pitch included fun scripts and engaging Google Slides to entertain parents and members of DIS administration.
Great job to the students in Ms. Aarons's class, Mrs. Anderson's class, and Mrs. Evans's class!
