Berkeley County School District (BCSD) will join school districts all over the nation next week with a celebration of National School Lunch Week.

The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has been fueling students for success for more than 75 years, and National School Lunch Week has become a way to celebrate that commitment to child nutrition and highlight nutritious foods available in school cafeterias.

BCSD, along with other school districts, is adopting the NSLP theme of School Lunch Pirates: Find Your Treasure.

Students eating school lunch will be eligible to win prizes throughout the week. A grand prize will also be awarded to a student at each school, selected randomly, who received school lunch on all five days.

Awarding prizes for National School Lunch Week is something the Child Nutrition Services department of BCSD has done for several years. Prizes are provided via various vendor perks programs at no cost to the district.

There are multiple ways such perks can be spent, but BCSD Child Nutrition Services Director Benny Smith says it makes most sense for everything to go back to the children.

“Our children are the reason we are here. If we are able to do anything to help brighten their day and get them excited about eating healthy, we should do that,” Smith said.
