Nature is sometimes our greatest teacher.
This week, roughly 700 BCSD elementary students spent a morning exploring the natural world at NatureScope in Old Santee Canal Park.
Students from Berkeley Elementary, Cainhoy Elementary, College Park Elementary, Foxbank Elementary, Moncks Corner Elementary, Westview Elementary and Whitesville Elementary got to enjoy educational wildlife shows by the Turtle Survival Alliance and The Center for Birds of Prey at NatureScope.
Additionally, students learned more about environmental science, conservation efforts and local environmentally friendly companies with interactive exhibits by:
Charleston Animal Society
JW Aluminum
Nucor Steel
SC Department of Health and Environmental Control
Clemson Extension
Berkeley Soil and Water Conservation District
Berkeley County Water and Sanitation
Repower South
Coastal Conservation League
SC Department of Natural Resources
Put on by Berkeley County Kids Who Care, a local non-profit focused on environmental science education, the winners of the non-profit's environmental science project competition were also announced at the event.
Lisa Brennan and Brittany Castle's classes from Whitesville Elementary came in second and third place, respectively.
Congratulations to Moncks Corner Elementary on winning first place for Elizabeth Partin's "Blooming Botanists" project! Four second grade classes researched, planted and documented their observations on Tickle Me plants and spread awareness on nature conservation throughout MCE to take home the top prize for the second year in a row.
SHOP LOCAL. YOUR PENNY MAKES A DIFFERENCE!
Did you know that Berkeley County voters passed a resolution in 2022 that benefits our ability to build and maintain schools? Commonly known as a "penny tax," the measure enacts a one-percent sales tax for specific construction projects.
