With roughly 85 percent of its student body being military children, Month of the Military Child at Marrington Elementary is a big deal.
On average, military children attend six to nine schools between kindergarten and 12th grade. Principal Jennifer Thielmann said that if they're lucky, a student with a parent in the military will stay at MNE for three years. Often, students leave before then because their parents get stationed somewhere new.
To recognize its students' resiliency during Month of the Military Child, the school had military members and parents greet and pass out purple bead necklaces to students on their way into school on Monday. Later that day, students paraded through the halls in their purple attire.
Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as it is a combination of Army Green, Navy Blue, Air Force Blue, Coast Guard Blue and Marine Red.
This week, students will also be treated to purple shaved ice and a speech from Lt. Col Dozier at the school.
