Salt Marsh Restoration Program
Cane Bay High School students have been part of the South Carolina Oyster Recycling and Enhancement (SCORE). This program is a community-based habitat restoration and monitoring program of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Since 2017, over 250 students from Mr. Richter’s Environmental and Natural Resources Management Career Pathway under the CTE Program have contributed to planting saltmarsh grass and putting out bundles of oyster shell bags that is part of saltmarsh restoration program along South Carolina’s coastline.
Oysters are critical to South Carolina’s ecology, economy, and culture, and oyster shell is the best resource to sustain oyster populations. Recycled oyster shell is placed back onto the shoreline during large scale plantings with volunteer-based oyster reef builds. Saltmarsh grass is planted along the shoreline just above the re-cycled oyster shells.
Over 25 students participated on May 2nd at historic Charlestown Landing, again contributing to the saltmarsh restoration program by planting over 100 saltmarsh grass seedling plugs (all of which were propagated by students at the school’s greenhouse/aquaponics). Students are already looking forward to next year’s trip.
As a way of continuing to promote child nutrition and adding to the many celebrations capping the end of the school year, Berkeley County School District’s Office of Child Nutrition Services will launch a special giveaway next week (May 20–24) that will offer some big prizes.
Elementary, middle and high school students eating lunch and/or breakfast next week will be entered into a drawing for prizes that include, but are not limited to:
*iPads
*Wireless earbuds/headphones
*Underwater cameras
*Projectors
*Action cameras
*Bluetooth speakers
Students will receive one entry into the drawing for each meal they eat. Winners will be drawn at random, and those who eat multiple meals will obviously have an increased chance of winning.
