Family Engagement Policy
Purpose: To support and maintain a partnership among the school, parents, and the community to improve students’ academic achievement and social-emotional intellect. The school shall:
Provide assistance, communication, and understanding of the State and Local academic standards, students’ achievement requirements, assessments, and how to monitor each child’s progress to improve the achievement of its children.
Hold an annual meeting inviting families to understand the school’s Title I status, provide timely information about the Title I programs, and inform them of their rights in a Title I school.
Involve stakeholders in the development, revision and evaluation of the Title I Schoolwide Plan, the Parent and Family Engagement Policy, the School Improvement Plan, and the Family-Student-Teacher Compact. The policy was jointly developed with stakeholders and the compact outlines how parents/guardians, the entire school staff and students will share in the responsibility for improved student achievement and social-emotional intellect.
Coordinate and integrate with appropriate agencies, programs, and activities such as Head Start, CERDEP, and First Steps programs that encourage and promote family relationships and participation in the education of their children.
Continue to support professional growth of a qualified and cohesive staff for the purpose of enhancing an effective learning environment. Provide the opportunity for children to academically succeed while assisting parents/guardians in the responsibility of supporting their children’s learning and social-emotional well-being (e.g. monitoring attendance, homework completion, extracurricular time, volunteering in their child’s classroom, and participating in decisions relating to the education of their children).
Communicate with parents/guardians through Parent-Teacher Conferences, individual student progress reports, reports cards, family engagement programs and materials to help support student learning outside of the classroom.
Provide professional development to school staff on how to reach out, communicate, and work with parents as equal partners to implement and coordinate parent programs and build ties between parents and the school.
Send information related to school reports, programs, meetings, and activities to families in a timely manner and in a language and format that is easily understood.
The school will provide materials and training to help families work with their children to improve their academic achievement, such as literacy training and using technology. The school will also provide opportunities for reasonable support for parental involvement activities as parents may request.
Encourage families to enlist the involvement of other parents/guardians.
Arrange Parent-Teacher Conferences for a time that will be convenient for both teacher and parents.
Develop appropriate roles for community-based organizations and businesses in family engagement. Provide information about opportunities for organizations and businesses to work with families and schools (encourage the formation of partnerships between elementary, middle, and secondary schools and local businesses that include a role for families).
Inform families of the existence and purpose of the Family Resource Room and encourage their involvement in the planning and organization of the room’s use.
Provide opportunities for regular meetings to gather suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as possible.
Family-Student-Teacher Compact
